Working Group 1 Australia in the World Meeting Chair: Lt. Gen. John M. Sanderson AC
The Australia in the World consultation focused on securing our political and economic future – the challenges and opportunities for Australia, looking ten, twenty and more years ahead:
Global
What will or can be Australia’s place in the world? What long-range policies and actions might be needed to ensure Australia’s future survival and prosperity?
Asia-Pacific Region
Asias' rise - what can be Australia’s place in the region, with the rise to global power status of China, but also of Japan and India? Also what about ASEAN and the roles of the US and Europe in Asia?
Our Fragile Neighbourhood
Australia exists in an ‘arc of instability’. How do we better secure stable long-term relations with Indonesia? What should be done to further assist PNG and the Pacific island states to achieve greater economic and political stability?
The Global Diaspora Of Australians Abroad
At any given moment, approximately 1 million Australians are living or travelling abroad. Long-term, is this brain-drain or a brain-churn? Does it matter if our young and brightest minds don’t return?

Testimonial from a Working Group participant:
“I have greatly enjoyed contributing to the very well chaired and organised Australia in the World working group, and believe the discussions certainly clarified the debate on Australia's future role in the Asia Pacific region and globally. In particular, it highlighted the importance of Australia providing responsible leadership and demonstrating a good example in its own region, and the importance of Australia, as a relatively well off nation, contributing positively to assist other nations to develop. For example, I would like to see us providing more positive support to international forums such as the United Nations. Thank you for the opportunity to be part of the consultation process."
